What is the difference between Perfume oil vs Perfume spray?
There is a HUGE difference between choosing to add a perfume oil vs perfume spray to your fragrance collection. The difference between them isn’t just the consistency and application but also the back end. The key difference you should be wary of is the concentration ratio. When comparing perfume oil vs perfume (also known as eau de parfum) concentration can have a significant difference in factors like longevity and scent intensity. These are two KEY things to look out for when choosing what type of perfume to buy. Let’s take a closer look….
Perfume Spray
- Combination of essential oils, alcohol and water
- They contain 15-20% essential oils.
Perfume Oil
- Combination of essential oils and carrier oils
- They contain 15-30% essential oils.
Essential oils are what make up your chosen fragrance’s scent profile.
Fragrance Longevity
Eau de parfum (Perfume sprays) are commonly known to last longer compared to other types of perfumes. Eau de parfum can linger for several hours. Several factors can contribute to fragrance longevity like the brand, cost, amount applied, expiry, skin chemistry, storage etc. Eau de parfum tends to last 6-8 hours on the skin but tends to last for a shorter period when sprayed on clothes.
Perfume oil tends to have a greater longevity than typical perfume. Because of the higher concentration of essential oils, this can allow for the scent to last on the skin for 8 hours or more.
Tip: Apply Vaseline to where you put your perfume BEFORE you spray it and it will last so much longer.
Winner: Perfume Oil
Scent Intensity
This differs between each product and is much harder to measure than the previous points mentioned. When considering this I would also take a look at your budget, if you were to spend $200 on a perfume vs $50 you’d expect the intensity to be a reflection of the price (and I would also check the price per ml). But scent longevity also plays a part in this as a perfume might have an intense scent to start with but then that initial intensity may die out within the next 30 minutes and you could be left with an unrecognisable perfume (which would be a nightmare).

Application Options
If application is a concern for you then you’ll want to pay close attention to this. Perfume oils tend to be applied with a glass rod which could be a concern for those of us wanting to apply on the go and fast. Eau de parfum is applied with a spray, which is super easy. The only other option I’ve seen for Eau de parfum is a roller ball which I love because it applies a much thicker layer than when sprayed, this makes it perfect for your pulse points
Although, as mentioned before typically perfume oil comes with a rod application, you can also find perfume oils with rollerball and even spray applications you just have to look a little harder!
Tip: If you don’t like applying perfume oil you can mix it with your moisturiser or body lotion for a thorough spread and even application!
Winner: Perfume Spray
Pricing
There is such a wide variety of brands, sizes and types of perfumes to get it is so difficult to find out which one is cheaper or more expensive. Considering the percentage of essential oil and longevity we can prove that perfume oil seems to be the best value for your money. Eau de parfum prices have such a wide range whereas perfume oils tend to not range as high. I can easily say you are more likely to find a better quality perfume oil at a low price compared to a perfume spray.

Combo
The ultimate best thing is to wear both! I know it is a little bit extra and may seem expensive, but it is so effective! As long as you match the perfume oil to the perfume spray you are good to go. Experiment with what scent you’re going for.
Tip: finding an arab perfume oil that matches your chosen perfume will help boost projection and longevity and add a unique aspect to your layering combo (Arab perfume is also known to be amazing and high-quality at a good price point)
Winner?
We tested perfume oil vs perfume spray and perfume oil has proven to be the winner! We learnt that due to perfume oil’s essential oil concentration being higher than eau de parfum it has stronger longevity. Scent intensity was challenging to test as the price point and manufacturer were a huge factor causing intensity to be unmeasurable. Eau de parfum did win the point for application as a general spray is easier application. However, we decided perfume oil deserves the point for pricing as the quality for a low price is much better than eau de parfum.
